The Department was established in the year 1965 under the able guidance of Prof. V. R. Damodara Kaimal, offering only Pre – Degree Courses. The undergraduate course was started in the year 1980 and was later upgraded to Post Graduate department in the year 1995. The department has dedicated laboratories for B.Sc. and M.Sc. classes which are equipped with sophisticated instruments and have a well-furnished computer lab with unlimited internet facility. Presently the department is strengthened by 6 permanent faculties, 1 guest faculty and 2 non-teaching staff.
The Department organizes exhibitions for the public and students and often conducts state level and national level seminars as well as invited talks. Students are given the opportunity to interact with eminent scholars and faculties through the ‘Scholar in the Campus’ program organized per annum by the Department. In association with IQAC of the institution, the Department conducts webinars under the Medha Webinar series, every year. Invited lectures, student presentations, quizzes for school and college students are organized in connection with National Science Day annually. The Department also hosts a YouTube channel, where faculties upload recorded classes for easy access by students.
