Diverse practices are implemented to manage wastes generated in the campus of Devaswom Board College Thalayolaparambu. The institution is committed to environmentally responsible practices that include proper management of all kinds of wastes. This policy outlines the guidelines and procedures for the effective and sustainable handling wastes formed within the institution.
Statement of Policy
The purpose of this policy is to minimize the environmental impact of different kinds of wastes both degradable and non-degradable. The institution shall provide bin segregation method to collect wastes such as plastic waste, food waste and paper wastes. Plastic wastes shall be handed over to Haritha Karma Sena coming under Gramapanchayat. The segregated food waste and other degradable wastes shall be recycled to produce biogas and vermicompost. Responsible and sustainable management of e- wastes shall be performed by signing a contract as MOU with an organization dealing with disposal of e-wastes.
Objectives
- To give awareness to the students and staff on the harmful effects of dumping of wastes
- To reduce the generation of wastes
- To ensure the exercise of bin segregation of wastes by students and staff.
- To instruct them on the types of sustainable waste management practices
- To manage the wastes generated in the campus by adopting sustainable methods
Implementation
- Shall decide to clean the classrooms by adopting the programme My Class My Pride.
- Involve the campus community in waste management initiatives through volunteer opportunities and events.
- Evaluate the effectiveness of waste management strategies regularly and make changes as needed.
Solid waste management
- An incinerator shall be installed in the campus to burn garbage.
Food waste management
- Shall adopt degradable waste management practices like installation of biogas plant and vermi-compost pits
- Food scraps and other organic waste shall be composted to create nutrient-rich soil for gardens.
Plastic waste management
- Promote the reuse and recycling of e-waste to minimize environmental impact.
- Plastic waste shall be handed over to haritha karma sena
E- waste management
- List out the e waste For the sustainable management of e-waste, an MoU is to be signed with an organization to ensure the safe disposal.
- Designate collection points for e-waste within the campus
- Adhere to all local, national, and international regulations related to e-waste management.
- Ensure safe and secure storage of e-waste before it is handed over to authorized recyclers.
